Reasons for not blogging

Hey schlubfans!

If I were a prosecutor, I think there are four sets of charges that I would indict a blogger who goes a month without blogging on.

(1) Extreme laziness.

(2) A disproportionate amount of work in what he does to actually keep food on the table.

(3) Getting an extremely loving girlfriend.

(4) Having a computer breakdown.

I plead guilty to all four of these charges. I have been traveling almost every weekend for the last month (with reason 3) and for some reason, the FSTS web site was down last week (4), and I was too busy (2) -- and lazy (1) -- to call my provider. But it seems to be working now. So there are many things that I will be blogging about in the next 24 hours. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, my apologies. Keep on schlubbin.

My reputation precedes me

One of my favorite conservatives (and poker players), Karol Shenin, gives From Schlub to Stud an extremely generous shout out on her blog, Alarming News.

To all of Karol's right wing readers: Welcome!

It's true, I'm probably a little bit more liberal than you. And if you become a regular reader of this site, my complete adoration of Barack Obama will no doubt grate on your nerves. But this blog considers itself open minded.

Schlubs are, by and large, extremely tolerant people. Even though one of my friends recently called me one of the "most left wing people I know", I would say that that that's only half true. I would invite you to consider the following two facts about me:

1) I work at the New York Post. (Yes, that New York Post.)

2) I went to Dartmouth College.

Obviously, I am a man who gets along with people of your ideological nutty ilk. I welcome your comments and insults.

For the record ...

As I mentioned a couple of days ago, my mother was pretty horrified when she saw the dedication of my book.

The dedication in question ("To my parents -- who never loved me enough!") was intended as a joke. Even though my mother doesn't find it funny, my father thinks it's hilarious -- and was even suggested by him!

Sort of...

When I told him I was dedicating the book to him and my mother he said, "Oh, no! Only if you say something like, 'To my parents -- who never told me they loved me enough.'"

I thought it was a really funny line and an hour or two later sent my editor the dedication, "To my parents -- who never loved me enough!"

"That is not the same thing!" my mother has since taken pains to tell me. (Along with the somewhat overly dramatic: "This is worse than what Philip Roth did to his parents!")

Well, OK. As someone in journalism, I recognize that the two are not quite the same thing. Not telling someone you love them enough is not the same thing as not loving them enough. She has a point. (But, come on, mom!) In any event she has asked me to issue a correction. Very well:

"To my parents -- who never told me they loved me enough!"

The dedication

So the book finally arrived!

And, like a dutiful son, I immediately took the first copy over to my mother's office to let her take a look.

Upon looking at the dedication she said, "This is the worst day of my life."

Later, when I called her up to see if she was really serious she said, "This is worse than what Philip Roth did to his parents..."
