On the passing of George Steinbrenner
In honor of the passing of Yankees owner (and Billy Martin bete noire) George Steinbrenner, I thought it was only fitting to play this clip of what was perhaps the funniest lampoon of a real life public figure on any sitcom (I'm not counting SNL as a sitcom.)
I always wondered what Steinbrenner thought of his portrayal on Seinfeld. But if he didn't like it, he should have. It made him seem sort of avuncular and benign. (For a less flattering portrayal, read Jonathan Mahler's great book, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Bronx Is Burning.)
In any event, so long Georgie. You made Yankees baseball interesting.
